The original Beta Iota Chapter was founded on December 6, 1935 on the campus of Western Michigan University. It was the 55th house and was de-charted because of World War II.

The new Beta Iota Chapter is housed at Winston-Salem University.

7 brave exceptional young men on October 10, 1962 chartered the Epsilon Xi Chapter and the 322nd House of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Served as a Michigan Supreme Court justice from 1985 to 1990 and in his final year on the bench, was named the most respected judge in Michigan by Michigan Lawyers Weekly.

Served as president of the American Bar Association, president of the State Bar of Michigan, president of the National League of Cities, and chair of the Board of Directors of the Detroit Regional Chamber.
